Papa Pilgrim Gets 14 Years for Abuse
Here is a bit from this news article:
"ANCHORAGE — Robert Hale, a self-styled mountain man who took his family far away from modern civilization to raise them by the Bible, was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison for sexually assaulting a daughter.
Judge Donald Hopwood imposed the sentence after more than a dozen heart-wrenching victim-impact statements were delivered in court, including from his wife and many of their 16 children, who told horrific stories of physical and mental abuse.
Their message was clear: Send the 66-year-old Hale to jail for a long time because they feared what would happen if he were to be released.
Hopwood called it "one of the worst cases of domestic violence I've seen.""
Matthew 18 says this:
"The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
2 He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3 And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6 But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
7 “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come! 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell."
"Hale received 10 years for sexual assault, and two years each for incest and coercion.
Hale insisted that he had a perfect spiritual understanding, his wife, Kurina Rose Hale, testified Monday."
I bet he did.

My heart breaks for those children. I'm also having a hard time not feeling judgement toward the mom (she must have been steeped in fear).
That man set himself up as a little abusive pope in his mountain-man kingdom. I have seen a few of these men separate themselves out of society and become more and more anti-social. I knew a couple of them and their teaching became more and more hypocritical and extreme and angry. God's Light was being at least hidden under a bushel, if there was any Light in them at all.
What darkness for that family in the news. I pray they come to the light of Jesus.
Kate,
I had all the same thoughts you did. I first thought of the children and the horrors they suffered. Then I wondered why the mother didn't do anything to protect her children from this monstrous man and then I figured she must have been so brainwashed and abused that she couldn't think for herself. I then wondered where were the Christians who knew this family and did anyone ever try and hold him accountable?
We met the Pilgrim's and are actually currently staying in a home (while we build ours) that they once lived in.
It's pretty freaky stuff.
Btw, yes (on did anyone try to help them). The reason they lived in the house we're now in is precisely becuase someone felt for the difficult life of the children and so loaned them this house. (I might add that the Pilgrim's completely trashed it and then refused to move out, but that's just a minor sad story compared to the whole).
No one knew the extent of what was going on, so no one could jump in to save. I mean, everyone knew the family was crazy, but...no one had any idea as to the extent of what was going on. I mean, think about it. The family was so brain-washed that they told NO one, and because they kept themselves away from others much of the time, there was no way anyone could know (unless they had literally moved in with them, and do you think the dad would let that happen?).
Molly,
Wow! I was wondering if you knew them at all. I hope that this family gets the help they need now they are free from such horror and tyranny.
It is like my story about knowing Jeffrey Dahmer and visiting one of the homes he had killed people in.
OOOOH - you knew Dahmer? YIKES - I am not sure even what to say. Did you write this story somewhere as I was trying to find it. I hope your new year is going well!
K.
